Cheslyn House and gardens
Cheslyn House gardens are 3.5 acres of beautifully designed gardens and woodlands where you and your family can explore and relax. The gardens are designed by architect Henry Colbeck and his wife, Daisy, and they contain exotic plants they collected while travelling the world, and include a pond, aviary, woods, landscaped gardens and wildlife. Church Farm Ardeley
Meet the animals, enjoy the Woodland Play, walks, and go on a Bear Hunt. Play Farm Bingo, puzzles and games with the Farm Activity Booklet. Your Farm Day Pass includes access to their woodland play area. Equipped with a wooden fort, wooden wigwams and playhouses and lots of ride on tractors for aspiring young farmers! Cromer Windmill
Come and immerse yourself in the local history, at Hertfordshire’s only surviving windmill. Their guides will be happy to tell you the captivating story of the mill. You will discover how the windmill works and how the many different elements of the mill machinery worked together like clockwork. De Havilland Aircraft Museum
Britain’s oldest aviation museum and much more besides. Our fine collection of iconic de Havilland aircraft, including Mosquito, Sea Vixen and Comet. The museum also includes, displays and exhibits of aviation technology: radar, piston and jet engines and missiles – films, exhibits and displays of wartime operations, weapons trials and military jet aircraft. Glow in One
Watford’s first glow in the dark mini golf, brings you 14 holes of crazy fun. You can enjoy plotting your way around the skateboard urban style holes before taking a selfie at the midway point and then blasting off to space for the final half. Graveley Fruit Farm
Open for fruit picking and the play area during June, July and August. All their fruit is available as Pick Your Own. The cafe serves teas, coffees and light snacks and ice cream. They have a large children’s adventure play area including a zip wire and a sandpit, and the play area is overlooked from the cafe. Tractor and trailer rides are available most weekends and include a trip over the ‘off road’ bumps at the back of the farm. Loads of fun in an adventure-filled ride. Hitchin Lavender
Home to acres of lavender, sunflowers, and wildflowers during the summer, and pumpkins during the autumn, the main field is their star attraction. At the height of summer, their sunny hillside, awash with hues of purple and gold, is a true sight to behold. They are also one of the only lavender attractions in the UK that allows visitors to pick lavender flowers fresh from their field. Mill Green Museum and Watermill
Hatfield’s 18th Century restored working watermill on the River Lea is a great day out for all the family. See the mill in action and learn about this ancient craft. The Watermill is open Fridays and Sundays 10am to 4pm. You can book ahead or come along on the day. Miller’s Kitchen is open on Sundays, where you can enjoy a cream tea with homemade scones made from flour fresh from their mill and other light refreshments. The Natural History Museum at Tring houses the incredible zoological collection of Walter Rothschild. There are many, many different taxidermy animals on public display from kangaroos to polar bears. North Hertfordshire Museum
North Hertfordshire Museum is open to the public six days a week (Tuesday to Sunday), they have four galleries, the Terrace Gallery houses a diverse collection, focusing mainly on people; the Discovering North Hertfordshire Gallery, which deals with the history of the district from the geological past to the present day; the Exhibition Gallery, with regularly changing exhibitions and the Living in North Hertfordshire Gallery shows how local people’s lives have changed over thousands of years. Parents Paradise: Soft Play

Roman Wall of St Albans
The Roman Wall of St Albans, which was built between AD 265 and 270 to defend the Roman city of Verulamium, can still be traced for most of its two-mile circuit. At its peak, the massive structure towered at a height of five metres and was topped by a walkway protected by a 1.8 metre parapet – giving some indication of the importance placed on what was then Roman Britain’s third largest town. Although today the wall no longer stands quite so tall, parts of the structure do still reach the impressive height of four metres, and the surviving foundations of two towers and bastions as well as the remains of the impressive London Gate make the wall well worthy of a visit. Royston Museum
Discover over 2000 years of Royston’s history with displays about the Romans, local industry, the Victorians and they have various events, talks and exhibitions at the museum. Thursday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm. They do not have a cafe at the Museum. However, you are welcome to enjoy a picnic outside in their courtyard, or upstairs in their Community Room. Scott’s Grotto
Scott’s Grotto is a magical place of rooms and tunnels clad in a variety of shells, fossils and other materials. The tunnels extend over 20 metres into the chalk hillside with the deepest chamber being some 10 metres below the hilltop. It was built in the 1760’s by local poet John Scott, a “most active and public spirited man”. Restored in 1990 an entrance porch was added, to replace the original which had been demolished, and lighting of the main chamber installed. Other than this the Grotto remains today much as Scott intended. Scott’s Grotto is open on Saturdays and Bank Holiday Mondays from 2pm – 4.30pm between 1st April and 30th September. No need to book. St Albans Cathedral
The Shrine of St Alban has been on the site of St Albans Cathedral for over 1700 years and has been a continual pilgrimage point for visitors since. Home to the longest nave at 85m, the cathedral dominates the St Albans skyline. Inside, the English Gothic styling is a sight to behold as are the stunning medieval wall paintings. If you wish to find out more about the cathedral itself, there are guided tours each day with an expert. Whether you are a pilgrim or a tourist, are interested in history, beautiful buildings or just want to come and have a cup of tea in their Abbot’s Kitchen, it is a great day out. Shaw’s Corner
Playwright, politician, philosopher and wit George Bernard Shaw lived in this Edwardian villa for over 40 years from 1906. Today, his home remains much as he left it. You can walk from room to room, enjoying the beautiful Arts and Crafts inspired interiors, and finding fascinating links with the past. Tring Reservoirs
Tring Reservoirs Nature Reserve comprises four individual reservoirs: Startop’s End, Marsworth and Tringford reservoirs are all close together and Wilstone reservoir is a short distance to the west. The reserve is known as one of the best bird-watching spots in the south of England. The reservoirs are home to a variety of wildlife and their reedbeds, wet woodland and open water habitats are a natural stronghold for birds. During colder months, you can find a large number of wintering wildfowl across all four reservoirs, including tufted duck, pochard, teal, gadwall, wigeon and shoveler with occasional goldeneye, goosander and smew if it is very cold. Verulamium Museum

Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden
Possibly the most famous stop for Harry Potter fans is the studios where the films were shot, the tour takes place across the sets from the Great Hall to Diagon Alley, with props, costumes, right through to creature effects where you can see how the animals were brought to life. Watford Miniature Railway
The miniature railway is located right in the heart of Cassiobury Park in Watford, They have been running for over sixty years and giving fun to generations of families in that time. Their station is right next to the park’s paddling pools, playground and Hub building, and they run trains at weekends and school holidays through most of the year. The railway runs in a wooded area adjacent to the River Gade, and returns you back to the station at the end of your trip. For further information click here
Welwyn Roman Baths
Step back in time 1,800 years to discover this fascinating remains of this ancient Roman Bath House. The baths feature three key rooms: the unheated frigidarium (cold room), the warm tepidarium, and the hot caldarium. A sophisticated hypocaust system provided underfloor and wall heating. Romans would progress through the rooms, using oil and a curved tool called a strigil for cleansing in the hot room. They would rinse in plunge pools, hot then cold. For wealthy Romans, bathing was a time-consuming social ritual. It could easily occupy an entire afternoon, combining relaxation with conversations and even business dealings.
