Wednesday 22nd January – Paediatric First Aid Certificate for Ofsted

Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid for preschool, nursery practitioners, childminders, nannies and other childcare professionals. The course meets the requirements for Ofsted and EYFS. Wednesday 22nd January – Games Night: Chess

Four Wednesdays of games. Every week from 6pm – 10pm, will be dedicated to different games, however all games will be available every week. 8th: chess,15th: board games, 22nd: table tennis and darts, 29th: video games. At The Orange Tree, 100 Stevenage Road, Hitchin, SG4 9DR.


Wednesday 22nd January – A Tale of Toys Talk

North Hertfordshire Museum, 14 Brand Street, Hitchin, SG5 1JE, has been collecting objects like toys for over a hundred years, donated by people who have outgrown them. Recently their Curator Matt Platt has been thinking about the tale of the toy, when did they first emerge? What sorts of things did people play with in the far distant past? Are toys from back then similar to today. Find out what toys have been spending their retirement years in their display cases in this evening talk. Wednesday 22nd January from 7.30pm. Thursday 23rd January – Baby Rhyme Time

These fun, half hour sessions of songs and rhymes are perfect for helping your child to learn language skills and are an opportunity for you to meet other families too. Thursdays from 10.15am – 10.45am and 11.15am – 11.45am. At Hitchin Library, Paynes Park, Hitchin, SG5 1EW.


Thursday 23rd January – Poetry Writing

Join the modestly titled ‘Master of Poetry’ Tom, from Shout or Whisper. He will take you on a six week journey, guiding you through different types of rhyme, explaining the mechanics of poetic forms like villanelles and sonnets, and helping you explore styles like confessionalism, objectivism and ekphrasis. Friday 24th January – IT Champion

IT Champions offer one-to-one support, problem-solving, and online safety advice for users of the library computers and WiFi. Fridays from 10am – 12 noon. At Hitchin Library, Paynes Park, Hitchin, SG5 1EW.


Monday 27th January – Community Drop In

All residents welcome. Enjoy free digital device advice, IT support, form-filling assistance, or simply drop in for a mug of soup, coffee, tea, cake, and a chat with locals. No charge, just turn up and enjoy the support from a team of local volunteers. Every Monday from 12 noon – 1.30pm, free community drop in sessions are held at Ickleford Village Hall, 82 Arlesey Road, Ickleford, Hitchin, SG5 3TG. Except Bank Holidays and School Holidays.


Monday 27th January – Lego Club for Children

Join Hitchin Library, Paynes Park, Hitchin, SG5 1EW, every Monday (during school terms) from 4pm – 5pm for their weekly Lego Club, places are limited so please book at the Library. Suitable for children ages 5+. Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult.


Monday 27th January – Quiz Night

Every Monday through January join The Orange Tree, 100 Stevenage Road, Hitchin, SG4 9DR, for their super quizzes from 8pm – 10pm.


Tuesday 28th January – Active Rhyme Time

A 45 minute session of fun, active rhymes and songs for your baby and toddler. A great way to meet other families and develop your child‘s communication and physical skills. For children with their parent or carer. Older siblings welcome. £2.50 per family pay on the day drop in. Tuesdays from 1.30pm – 2.15pm, at Oughton Children’s Family Centre Mattocke Road, Hitchin, SG5 2NZ.


Tuesday 28th January – Storytime

Join Hitchin Library, Paynes Park, Hitchin, SG5 1EW, for Storytime, every Tuesday from 2pm – 2.30pm, in the children’s area of the Library. They will share a selection of books and rhymes at each session. Until 1st July.


Wednesday 29th January – Classical Retellings Panel

The genre of classical retellings is ever increasing in popularity with a number featuring the bestsellers list over recent months. Join Hitchin Library, Paynes Park, Hitchin, SG5 1EW, for this unique event featuring authors who have boldly explored the hidden truths of Greek and Roman mythology, reimagining the epic tales of ancient heroes and gods, and shedding new light on timeless legends. Saturday 1st February – Community Surgery

Join North Herts Council on Saturday 1st February from 10.30am – 12 noon, for the Hitchin Community Surgery. It is a fantastic opportunity to discuss any matters of interest or concern with your Councillors. At Market Place, Hitchin.


Saturday 1st February – Spiritual and Craft Event

Come along and take a look there’s something for everyone from alternative treatments. So why not come and have a browse or even a mini treatment. There will also be readers, Healers, Therapists, Crystals, Jewellery, Candles with talented stall holders who create some amazing crafts. Tuesday 4th February – Always Invited

Drop in on the first Tuesday of every month from 10.30am – 12 noon for a chat, make new friends over tea, coffee, biscuits and various activities. No need to pre-book, everyone is welcome. At Hitchin Library, Paynes Park, Hitchin, SG5 1EW. This month a special Always Invited talk, hosted by Essex and Herts Air Ambulance service


Wednesday 5th February – Discover Monoprint

This course will take you step by step through the different techniques and themes so you can go home with a new piece of artwork every week. Every Wednesday in February from 7pm – 9pm. Week one: botanical exploration with stencils and leaves, Week two: reductive monoprint, figures inspired by Degas. Week three: additive monoprint, still life inspired by Cezanne. Saturday 8th February – Baby Rhyme Time

On the 2nd Saturday of the month Hitchin Library have a special Saturday Baby Rhyme Time session from 10.15am. The library opens at 10am, so why not join them in rhymes and songs delivered by their fantastic staff. No need to book in advance, all are welcome. Thursday 13th February – Community Dementia Cafe

Join Barchester – Iris Court Care Home, Hitchin Road, Gosmore, St Ippolyts, Hitchin, SG4 7QH, on the Second Thursday of each month from 10am – 12 noon, for their community Dementia Café. Come along and meet with friends over refreshments, join in the mornings entertainment or hear talks from guest speakers on how to live well with dementia.


Tuesday 18th February – Craftea

A monthly drop-in, open to everyone, bring your current craft project and have a chat over tea and coffee. Tuesday from 10.30am – 12 noon.


Thursday 20th February – Fossil Handling

Get your hands on some fossils from the museum collection, and learn about what lived underwater North Herts millions of years ago. Thursday 20th February – Hitchin Jazz

A jazz jam in Hitchin, open to all players, singers and listeners, at the Market Theatre, 6A Sun Street, Hitchin, SG5 1AE.  Trumpet player Matt Ward shares some of his favourite tunes, alongside a rhythm section from great local musicians. Thursday 20th February from 8pm. To book click here


Saturday 22nd February – Vegan Market

The Hitchin Vegan Market event takes over the Riverside, adjacent to the regular market, on just two Saturdays throughout the year. The event brings together a huge variety of vegan street food vendors, artisan bakers, craft brewers, ethical jewellers, sustainable chandlers, local artists, zero-waste champions, environmental charities and loads more. Saturday 22nd February from 10.30am – 4pm. Next is 27th September.

Join NCT North Herts for the next of thier amazing bi-annual Nearly New Sales. Whether you are expecting, or have children
up to the age of 12, they guarantee you will find a bargain to suit you, everyone is welcome to attend, you do not have to be an NCT member, although if you are you get in early. Saturday 22nd March – Katie’s Pride Picnic

A picnic to support and celebrate the local LGBTQ+ Community, and to share the love, everyone is welcome. Bring a picnic and something to sit on. Saturday 22nd March from 12 noon, at Windmill Hill, Hitchin.


Saturday 22nd March –  British Schools Museum: Ghost Hunt

Experience a night of ghost hunting at the British Schools Museum, 41-42 Queen Street, Hitchin, SG4 9TS. Participate in Séances, Vigils, Table tilting, Glass moving, Ouija boards, EVP Experiments, Automatic writing and much more. A rare opportunity to spend an evening with one of the finest fiddle players of his generation for an intimate event at St. Mary’s, Churchyard, Hitchin, SG5 1DW, where Sam will showcase some of his favourite traditional tunes as well as his own work. Wednesday 2nd and Thursday 3rd July – Groundswell Festival

The Groundswell Festival provides a forum for farmers, growers, or anyone interested in food production and the environment to learn about the theory and practical applications of regenerative farming systems. It is a two-day event featuring talks, forums and discussions from leading international soil health experts, experienced arable and livestock farmers, agricultural policy experts, direct-drill demonstrations and AgTech innovators. Wednesday 2nd and Thursday 3rd July from 10am – 4pm. Saturday 26th July – Model Railway Society Annual Exhibition

Join Letchworth Model Railway Society for their 38th Annual Exhibition at The Priory School, Bedford Road, Hitchin, SG5 2UR. Saturday 26th July from 10am – 4.30pm. Many traders and layouts. Free on-site parking. Admission £5. Accompanied children under 16 free entry.
